Millions more people will be able to see one of the most astounding astronomical events of their lives. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and Sun completely obscuring the Sun. Opportunities to view a total solar eclipse are rare because they’re typically only visible from a very small fraction of the Earth’s surface. Quebec hasn’t witnessed a total solar eclipse in over 50 years, since 1972, and it will be over 80 years before the next one in 2106. The average for any one spot on Earth to see a total solar eclipse is about once every 375 years. The eclipse on April 8, 2024, will enter North America in western Mexico around 12:10 pm Mountain Time, cross the United States, and exit through southeastern Canada around 5:15 pm Newfoundland Time. On the path of totality, the solar eclipse will be at its maximum in Hamilton Ontario at 3:18 pm EDT, for 1 minute and 50 seconds, and in Montreal Quebec at 3:26 pm EDT, for 1 minute and 27 seconds. This time, over 32 million people live on the path of totality. The Sun is nearing what is called the “solar maximum” of its traditional 11-year cycle and is very active. One should not drive or operate machinery at the time of the solar eclipse, in the path of totality. People usually travel to the path of totality to experience the solar eclipse, and have solar eclipse glasses, safe for solar viewing.

We’ll stay inside our homes, and engage in spiritual practices. We’ll not look at the solar eclipse even with the certified glasses, but will host a free meditation on Zoom at 3 pm EDT. We’ll offer love energy to wildlife during the solar eclipse, hoping that animals would be in the caves or forests. We’ll ensure that our children, animal guardians and ourselves are safe in a room with no sunlight, and closed window blinds. Feel free to prepare your sacred sound instruments –  drums, singing bowls, gongs, rattles, flutes, and others. It’s best to engage in spiritual activities and keep calm during the solar eclipse time, as energy could be very dynamic. Old things will be ending and new things will be beginning. The solar eclipse is a time of rebirth and renewal. Feel free to prepare your altar, and make offerings of flowers, incense, water, fruits, and grains to the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon. The Sun, representing the masculine energy kisses the Moon, representing the feminine energy, that can be seen from the Earth, the synergy of the Sun and the Moon energies.

We’ll connect with the Love Generator in our consciousness and ask for the transformation of suffering into unconditional love. It’s a perfect time to connect with the primordial Buddha, the first Buddha, a teacher of all Buddhas, called Samantabhadra, or in Tibetan Kuntuzangpo. Visualize the Buddha blue in color surrounded by rainbow. The solar eclipse is an opportunity to affect awakening on the global scale. Let us today recite the “The Powerful Aspiration through which sentient beings cannot resist awakening,” from the Dzogchen Tantra Revealing Samantabhadra’s Mind of Unimpeded Openness:

“I am the Primordial Buddha here to train the six kinds of beings through all my manifestations. Through Kuntuzangpo’s prayer, may all you beings without exception attain enlightenment in the state of Dharmadhatu. Ah Ho! Hereafter, whenever a very powerful yogin with his or her Awareness radiant and free from delusion recites this very powerful prayer, then all who hear it will achieve enlightenment within three lifetimes. During a solar or lunar eclipse, during an earthquake earth rumbles, at the solstices or the new year, you should visualize Kuntuzangpo. And if you pray loudly so all can hear, then beings of the three realms will be gradually liberated from suffering, through the prayer of the yogin and will finally achieve enlightenment.”

We’ll recite that prayer during the solar eclipse. The color blue of Samantabhadra / Kuntuzangpo symbolizes the expansive, unchanging quality of space, which is the ground of all arisings, the basis of all appearances, and the source of all phenomena. The absence of robes symbolizes the genuine reality beyond any dualistic, conceptual, or philosophical clothing. That is the dharmakaya buddha: the genuine body of absolute truth.
